Is the O-ring applied to all breast shield sizes in the Pump In Style® Hands-free pack?
Yes, The O-ring is applied to all 21mm and 24mm breast shield sizes that are included in the pack. If you are missing an O-ring please reach out to Medela customer service. Additional O-rings can also be found sold separately.
Do you have to be sitting or can you be more active?
The Pump In Style® Hands-free breast pump features in-bra collection cups for multi-tasking and comes with an external battery pack for flexibility of moving your pumping location from place to place without relying on a wall outlet. The cups themselves are not designed to be used while bending completely or during intense activity as there is an opening (pouring spout) at the top of the cups through which milk could spill out.
Do I need a special bra to be able to use the Hands-free Collection Cups?
A special bra is not required when using the Hands-free Collection Cups. The cups are designed to fit into most nursing bras.
Do you have control of suction in stimulation and expression?
Pump In Style® Hands-free is designed with Medela’s research-based 2-Phase Expression® technology. In both stimulation and expression phases, mom can choose up to 10 levels of vacuum.
Is double pumping more effective?
Medela researchers found that double pumping obtains 18% more milk on average, compared to single pumping³ leaving you with more time for other things in your life.
When cups are full can you empty them and then keep pumping?
Yes! When the cups are full mom can stop pumping, pour the expressed milk into a breast milk-safe collection bottle or storage bag and continue her pumping session. Hands-free Collection Cups hold 150ml / 5oz of breastmilk each.
I overproduce, does it shut off when the cups are full?
No, Pump In Style® Hands-free does not shut off automatically when the collection containers are full. However, because of the collection cups’ transparent design and side scale indicator, it’s easy for a mom to monitor how much she has collected during that session and pause pumping if the cups are full.
Are the Hands-free Collection Cups easy to clean?
With only 3 parts to clean Pump In Style® Hands-free has been designed to make cleaning easy so you can spend time on more important things. Additionally, all parts are dishwasher-safe.

How can I clean and dry the tubing?
The pump features a closed system so milk cannot get into the tubing when used as instructed. Do not clean or rinse the inside of the tubing under any circumstances. The exterior of the tubing can be wiped down with a damp cloth if dirty.
Can I store milk in the collection cups between pump sessions?
No. Do not use collection cups to store expressed breastmilk as it could tip over and spill from the pour spout. When a mom has finished pumping, any breast milk expressed should be poured into a milk-safe storage container.
Can I use the Classic PersonalFit Flex™ kit parts with my Pump In Style® Hands-free breast pump?
Yes. The pump motor you receive with Pump In Style® Hands-free works with our classic PersonalFit FlexTM parts too (sold separately). If you already have them, or would like the flexibility to pump with them, you can enjoy the complete benefit you get from the seamless integration between the two.
When finished pumping, how can I drain the milk from the tunnel into the cups?
To finish your pumping session, while the pump is still running lean forward and ensure all milk from the nipple tunnel enters the collection cups. Once there is no more milk in the tunnel stop the pump by turning off the pump.
How often do I need to clean the Hands-free Collection Cups?
Sanitise before first use and once daily, and wash before first use and after each use. Always ensure all parts are completely dry before re-assembly.
Can I return my breast pump if I change my mind?
Pump In Style® Hands-free is a single-user device, therefore for hygiene and safety reasons, it can only be used by one person. This means that once the tamper seal is broken, you will not be able to return it to us or a retailer unless it is faulty. If you received a faulty or malfunctioning device, please contact the Medela customer service team to see if you are eligible for a warranty replacement.
What level does the Pump In Style® start in during Expression Phase?
Pump In Style® Hands-free double electric breast pump defaults to the vacuum level/setting mom ended her Stimulation Phase in by gradually ramping up to that level within 3 cycles. (Example Mom is at level 7 while in Stimulation. When the pump automatically or manually switches to the Expression Phase the vacuum will ramp from level L4, L5, L6 and hold constant at L7 until mom manually changes the vacuum using the + or - buttons.
Is there a way to stop it switching after a minute?
There is no way to stop Pump In Style® Hands-free breast pump from switching to Expression Phase after 1 minute, however, once it automatically switches, if mom wants to go back to Stimulation Phase she can simply push the let-down button and the pump will switch back. She can toggle back and forth between Stimulation and Expression as many times as she’d like throughout her pumping session by pushing the let-down button.
How long does the external battery pack last for Pump In Style® at full charge (minutes / hours)?
The length of time your external battery pack lasts depends on many factors such as quality of batteries, length of pumping sessions and vacuum level. It will differ for every user.
Do I need the original charger?
To prevent damage, always use the Medela charger that came with your breast pump. If you are in need of a replacement you can find an authentic spare part sold separately at a retailer near you.
